This must be the last posting. If you have further issues to address, please contact me via emails. Since I emailed you your scores, I presume all of you know my personal email address. Note that some students received upgrades (say b- to b0) because of their extra efforts into projects. I regret that I should have not listened your peevish remarks on the midterm and must have made the final a little more difficult in order to get wider intervals for A’s (A+,A0, A-). Here’s how I made cuts

Please, read your text book to know more statistics since our short time couldn’t cover all materials. In fact, what’s in the book is the tip of the iceberg. I wish I could have more time to discuss “nonparametric statistics” and “Bayesian statistics.” I do wish you open your eyes as you opened yours for me during the Spring 2010. Thanks for your hard work during the semester and wish you for the best.

By the way, I left your cheat sheets to one of your classmates and I think she already gave it to our TA (Ms. Lina). Please, find it when you return from the summer vacation.

As of today 06/28/2010, no one raised suspicion on their final exam scores except grades (You’ll find your grade through the school’s official route, not me. I’ll post where cut offs were made afterwards). If you want to argue with me about your scores 1. you can visit me (I’m in Yangjae dong during working hours) or 2. you may come Tuesday evening. So far, my visiting school on Tuesday evening will not occur since there’s no request. If there’re requests for meeting me Tuesday evening, I’ll post where we can meet soon. As before, not everyone has to come. Some seems already out of town.

(Sometimes, relying too much on statistics or blindly applying staistics could mislead you to a false conclusion. A healthy person can be diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer, a death sentence).

By the way, I made up my own titles in italic in order to show you the content of the presentation. Many use titles in terms of statistical methodology. Furthermore, I’m not posting authors, nor their slides for the privacy reason; however, since you already did peer reviews, if you found your interest and questions during their presentation, talk to them directly. From my experience, knowing key words and titles help initiating further discussion. Personally, I welcome if you discuss more statistics and possible statistical applications.

~~I’ll email your scores individually~~. I almost finish grading the final and will combine other scores. Because of previous postings, some already know classmates’ 3 digit partial IDs. ~~There might a day or two delay (yeah, still busy), please leave a comment to this post if you don’t receive any emails from me by Friday night.~~ Sorry, guys! I couldn’t access internet Friday night. You’ll have it by Saturday evening, I’ll begin emailing you (2:00pm).

By the way, a few things to be reminded when you receive my email.

Many did well in the final. There’s one who scored 100 out of 100. Some people made a big jump compared to the midterm. Congrats!!!
Your exam scores are multiplied by 0.3. Say you received 83.5, which was the average score of the final exam. Then, in the email your score will appear as 25.05. The average of the midterm was 76.9, if you like to know where you stand. In summary, if you see 30 in your exam score, 30/0.3 = 100 is what you got from the exam.
There are small deductions in attendance, homework, presentation, and final report. If you like to know why you didn’t received full credit (10 for each), email me back. Overall, even if there are one homework and one attendance allowance, there were some students who missed/were late for class more than once, failed to submit homeworks on time, and didn’t show full efforts in their homeworks. Deductions in report and presentation, I’ll answer if you question me personally via email.
Even though you have a few point deductions from homework, attendance, presentation, and report, it seem raising those small lost points won’t push your rank/standing up in our class for changing your final grade. My biggest concern is my grading your final. If any of you think you received lower scores in the final than expected, you must report to me. Also, those who show an intention of extra credit, within a reasonable boundary, you’ll see a better grade than you expected.
I’ll post how your grades are assigned (those cut offs) after hearing from you before July begins. If many say they deserve more numbers or less numbers, I’ll go the university in the evening to meet you, say Tuesday 7:30ish? in order to resolve any discrepancy.

First of all, I’d like to thank you all for your hard work. I hope someday, your knowledge from this statistics course become useful.

I’d like to comment one more thing. Please, check this blog next week (23rd, Wed.) for your scores. I’ll post your attendance scores, project scores, and final scores. If necessary, we can arrange a meeting to resolve any discrepency in scores but email me first for immediate changes.

By the way, I’ll return your formula sheets via our TA or someone from our class. Please, find them in future and use them for other purposes. All other information related to final grades will be posted in the blog when I post your scores.

So, except checking the blog for scores, there’s nothing much to do other than enjoying the summer vacation. Have fun and be ready for the fall semester. Good luck!

All, I’d like to mention your final scores for the assignment part.

One person didn’t write his/her name in HW10/11. To make the matter worse, there/s no hand writing. I cannot guess. Please, email me your file again so that I know your identify; otherwise, anyone can claim it’s his/her homework.

As said the total is 10. As long as you handed in 10 out of 11 assignments with diligence, you’ll get 10. I’ll accept HW10 and 11 with penalty (50%) until the final exam.

Those who scored 8 probably would like to check not only HW10 and 11 but other earlier homeworks. My record shows that you have not submitted earlier one, at least once.

As expected, all of you did very well in presenting your interests and relevant research. Congratulations!!! I was very excited and still am.

Please, send your reports (or legible ppt files) before the final exam day. Once the exam is over, I’ll post titles of your talk so that you can ask your friends again if you find a particular interest. We covered so broadly: geographically (all over the places & the earth itself), subject-wise (music, sport, economics, politics, biology, public health, etc), methodology-wise, and even philosophically (Simpson’s paradox, suicidal music). I strongly encourage you to discuss how to analyze data in future with friends.

Lastly, we’ll meet 9:30am on Saturday. ~~The room number is not confirmed.~~ Rm. 506 (Thanks to our TA). If you cannot come but have some questions, email me. I’ll try to reply as much as possible (also post them on the blog so that people can share). Like the midterm, you’ll be allowed to bring A4 size paper with notes. Please, bring your calculator (you’ll need to compute a few arithmetic operations to get test statistics. But I’ll not ask you to compute means and standard deviations based on 21 or more observations) and the tables from the last exam. I’ll collect them, which will account for 10% of the final score, like last time.

The final exam is on June 16th.

I’ll ask Carolina to reserve a room on June 12th to discuss our final exam in the morning (If time allows, I’ll discuss a few extra topics from the textbook). We’ll not have a lecture on 5th to make the election holiday class cancellation up. Since I’ll be out from Ewha Univ. around a quarter to 5, I can visit Sogang univ. for a casual discussion session for an hour or so after 5pm. We can meet not only at K hall but some open place if weather permits. Email me if you are interested with a location. I’ll post it by Friday night – either a location/time or a cancellation.

On Projects and schedules

I’ve enjoyed reading your proposals and made a short comment on each submitted sheet. If you emailed me, I’ve replied. If I forgot to do so, please, remind me. On your feedback, I wrote how many minutes your presentation is supposed to be. If not, here’s the rule of thumb. If you work alone, it’ll be a 5 minute talk (at most 5 slides including a title page). If you have a partner, 5 minutes each and in total, 10 minutes (at most 9 slides including a title page). If you have two partners, 15 minutes, at most 13 slides. There are a few who want to do more serious presentation as a midterm exam make up. If so, double your presentation and also send me your presentation file by June 5. My explanation for this early request for those who work harder than others is that I can give you feedback to make your work deserving curves/adjustments of your disappointing midterm and time to change before June 8. Everyone must email me their ppt files by June 8th so that I can rename your files for efficient time management on June 9th. Please, observe time since we have limited time to hear all presentations (No matter what I must leave before noon). Time management and effectiveness in delivering your theme is what I’ll look for. I’ll adopt peer reviews to grade your presentation. Listening others well is important. You’ll give a brief comment to your friends which will vary your own score. I’ll combine your feedbacks from others, the sincerity of your peer reviewing, and your presentation for overall scores (10 pts in total). Once the presentation is over, submit either a full version of powerpoint presentation (more than what you prepared for the presentation) or a regular report using MS word/HWP. The content, proper understanding of statistics, and your enthusiasm is the key to a good score from your report (another 10 points). You could get a good score from the report but bad score from presentation and vise versa. However, they are generally highly correlated.

Here are some important date guideline.

June 2: No class. It’s an election day
June 5:
- Preliminary due of emailing the presentation file (not everyone but those who scored low in the midterm because of bad luck – It was written in the mid term sheet).
- Please, reply to this post if you can come during 5:30pm – 7:30pm to learn about multiple regression and something else (general topics in statistics). It seems like the earliest I can be at the K hall is 5:30pm.
June 9: Presentations The order of presentation will be listed below.
June 12: practice session Unless more than 7 people agree to come on June 5, I’ll not trouble myself to discuss topics in statistics. Instead, we can have a short one after the practice session. So here’s a brief schedule:
- 9:30am – 11:30am: we’ll do a Q&A session for the final.
- 11:30am – 1:00pm: a discussion session about general topics in statistics including multiple regression
- Neither of these sessions do not ask your attendance. I’ll ask T/F questions to check your understandings on basic notions in statistics from the exam coverage but there will be more writing (remember the procedure of hypothesis testing) problems than the midterm.
June 16: Final Project Report Due (one per group)
THE FINAL EXAM, covering from Chapter 10 to materials from the last lecture. Hypothesis testing, Analysis of Variance, Simple Regression, and a bit of Time Series.
- Like the midterm, you can have a double sided A4 sheet with formulas and your own notes.
- Please, bring the copy of tables that you used in your Midterm (If you threw them, make your own copy). You’ll regret if you don’t bring it.
- I’ll take some questions related to the final exam on June 9th if you keep presentation times well enough.

By the way, the order of presentation will be announced on June 1st. I’ll try to put similar topics by statistical methodology together.

We will review the Midterm
Please, read the posting below [04.21] 8th week: regarding projects. Since we are not meeting due to Children’s day, next week, I wish you to spend some time on your project topics. Please, turn in a sheet or email me about your project by May 19 (at least, you must talk to me what has delayed from selecting topics). In the sheet/email, the following must be included.
1. Your name/ID
2. If you have, your partner’s name
3. Topic (e.g. Hypothesis testing, Analysis of Variance, Time Series, Regression, Simulations on CLT, Poisson distribution, and more – I’ll give you some more ideas and relevant references if you are interested in computing, Nonparametric tests (rank tests), etc
4. data set description [You may find one or change later. I hope you find one related your concentrations or interests] or the bibliographic information of your topic review presentation.
5. Requirement for Project credits: presentation file (ppt or pdf) must be sent by June 08 and correction on the ppt (I’ll give you feedbacks during your presentations) or a report must be sent by June 20 (last day of the final week). Conversion from a ppt to a full report is recommended but not mandatory.
I’ll add a few examples in the following posts during this weekend. Please, check this website next week although we have no class. In the mean time, you might want to talk to senior students (who already took the class, perhaps) for their advice and for informations.
